The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge deserves being called 'Grand' as it is truly a remarkable structure costing $8.5 billion! 10,000 workmen finished construction on 15th November 2010 and it was opened in June 2011. The moment it was finished it broke the records of all other bridges. It was this record that caused issues when it was said to have broken the record set by the Pontchartain Causeway.
The Danyang-Kunshan bridge has a number of notable sections. There is the rail transport section, also named as the Langfang-Qingxian viaduct covers a distance of 114km (70.8 miles). This section carries the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed train that can reach speeds of 300km/h (186 mp/h). Another section crosses the open waters of Yangcheng Lake which stands upon 2,000 pillars and uses 450 million kg (450,000 tonnes) of steel and can survive an impact from vessels weighing up to 30 million kg (30,000 tones). As well as a vessel strike the bridge can also take a magnitude 8 earthquake.
