Bullmastiffs were bred to help game keepers deal with poachers and not to bite the captive. Strong and fierce looking, poachers were quickly subdued and as a result it is also known as 'Gamekeepers Night Dog'.
The Bullmastiff is very alert, devoted, docile and affectionate until provoked. The breed makes an excellent guard dog having no need to cause harm. Despite this the breed is tolerant towards children.
Like the Bloodhound, the Bullmastiff tends to drool, slobber and snore a lot.
Ideally, the Bullmastiff needs a daily walk to keep it healthy both physically and mentally. Daily walks help to feed the natural desire to move about, to migrate from one place to another.
