There are 3 official sizes of the Poodle breed, Toy, Miniature and Standard. The Toy and Miniature Poodles have all been bred from the Standard Poodle.
There is a lot of controversy over where the Poodle originated from. Some say Germany, some say Denmark and other say France, but what is known is that the breed has been in Europe for at least 400 years. It is also known that it descended from the now extinct French Water Dog, the Barbet and possibly the Hungarian Water Hound. It is widely recognised that 'Poodle' came from the German word 'prudel' which translated means 'one who plays in water'.
The Poodle became very popular with the French aristocracy especially royalty and was used to sniff out truffles and retrieve water fowl. This task earned it the name by French 'commoners' - 'Caniche' which means 'Duck Dog'.
As with all dogs, good regular exercise is important. The breed is intelligent and very energetic so much so that it has been common to see this breed in circuses.
